Picture of Edgar Furlong, textile artist Edgar A. Furlong started weaving in 1994. He studied with many well-respected teachers and artists, such as Lydia Van Gelder, Holy Brachmann, Katherine Alexander, Liz Williamson, and most recently Jane Dunnewold.

Edgar’s focus is to introduce a life and depth to a medium that is usually more one-dimensional. His textile designs have won numerous awards over the years and Edgar has been teaching his winning techniques to interested students. Since 2000 Edgar has been working on new processes with textured surface pieces where the cloth collapses on itself during the finishing process.

In 2001-2002 Edgar introduced handspun and commercial yarns to this process to produce new and dramatic effects that explores multi-layered cloth and the incorporation of movement in a finished piece. The resulting hand-woven pieces include surface design techniques such as discharges, appliqués, resists, over dyes and the use of metallics and shibori.

My, lastest attention is on the deconstruction, fufilling, exploring the variables. What things add and what detracts. In what way do these finishing techniques influence the way we experience textiles.

My work is all those things I hold close and dear. As potters create ceramics from Clay, I use Raw natural and man made fibers to create yarns. Working with these handspun yarns; so full of life, has allowed me to explore visually what I am feeling with all my senses when creating the yarn.

I am often asked, "why Handspun" ? When shown what is made from handspun most people see the differnce . Using my knowledge of color and dyes pieces are designed to create the look feel and of one of a kind!

Edgar's work has been exhibit in Galleries, juried shows, Local and State Fairs. Edgar has won numerious awards; which you can see when visiting his studio. However the one most inportant to him is the Award of Excellence for handspun-Hand Woven Shawl from The Northern California Handweavers Guild of America. My knowledge of fiber, Dyes, Color and yarn, allow me to design the look and feel of a one of a kind treasure.
